Homestay accommodation offers international students the chance to stay with an Australian family, practise English, and learn about the different cultures in Australia, all within a family atmosphere.
Homestay is more than "full board" accommodation. International students are welcomed and treated as a member of the family. It offers students a safe and stable living experience that is both friendly and tolerant of cultural differences.
Students not only benefit from the experience of living with Australians in an English speaking household where their daily needs are catered for, but also have the opportunity to establish a very worthwhile ongoing friendship with the family. Homestay families (providers or host) also benefit greatly from the cross-cultural exchange in a friendly, welcoming environment
QUT's Homestay Program is co-ordinated by International Student Services (ISS) and is very experienced in managing the expectations of both students and families. The program endeavours to maintain a high standard by ensuring all involved are aware of the Code of Ethics and Guidelines for homestay students and for providers.
The information in these pages are meant as a practical guide for both homestay students and the families that host them. It will help you to get the most out of the experience, and overcome some tricky problems that might occur. All new experiences may sometimes be a little scary, but if you approach it with an open mind and a positive attitude, you're sure to have experiences and create friendships you will treasure forever.
